What are Dental Implants?

Illustration of dental implant in jawbone

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, typically a small titanium post, that is placed in the jawbone where a natural tooth once was. Because titanium is biocompatible, it naturally fuses with the surrounding bone, creating a secure and long-lasting foundation. Several implants can then be used to support a bridge or full arch of teeth, restoring both the look and function of natural teeth — from root to crown. We offer a wide variety of implant options, including full arch/All-On-X for full coverage.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

There are four steps every patient must complete to receive state-of-the-art dental implants: the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment placement, and retrieval of the custom restoration. At Precision Dentistry of Howard, Dr. O’Donoghue is here to ensure you understand what is required for this process to be successful, which is why he spends ample time explaining how dental implants work in Green Bay.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

Whether you were referred to us by your general dentist or came to see Dr. O’Donoghue directly, the process will start with a thorough evaluation of your jawbone, oral health, and overall health to determine if dental implants are the right solution for you. Using advanced digital technology, our team will evaluate these factors and decide whether you need additional treatment to prepare your smile for permanent prosthetics. This may include gum disease treatment, bone grafting, tooth extraction, etc.

Dental Implant Surgery

Dr. O’Donoghue will plan the surgical placement of your implants using a 3D CBCT scan, and the procedure will be performed with the assistance of our advanced technology to ensure precise placement.

He will begin by administering local anesthesia to numb your mouth so that you don’t feel any pain throughout the placement process. When ready, he will use a navigational tool that possesses the CT scan of your mouth, allowing for more accurate and precise implant placement. With careful control of the instrument, Dr. O’Donoghue will guide each implant post into the proper area of your jawbone, ensuring it is positioned correctly to deliver maximum support.

Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment

Over the next three to six months, your implants will fuse with your jawbone, which is called osseointegration. While your implants integrate with the bone, you’ll receive temporary prosthetic teeth to help you maintain oral functionality. You will need to follow the aftercare instructions provided by our team to avoid any potential complications.

When osseointegration is complete, you’ll return to our office to have your metal abutments secured to the tops of your dental implants. These metal connectors keep your restoration in place once it is properly attached.

The big day is here! We will remove your temporary teeth and attach your brand-new, meticulously designed dental prosthetic to your implants. Whether it is a crown, bridge, or full-arch denture, we will review its physical appearance before securing it in place.

Then, we’ll check your bite and provide a few finishing touches before letting you enjoy your new smile.

When it comes to dental implant technology, the future is truly here! This provides an exceptional level of precision and control throughout the process and also makes it even easier for Dr. Donoghue to complete full-arch implant surgery in just one visit. By translating the patient’s CT scan into a navigational tool, traditional surgical guides become obsolete.

Rest assured, Dr. O’Donoghue is always in control and handling all instruments during your procedure. This technology isn’t replacing real dentists – it’s simply complementing their skill and providing pinpoint guidance that goes above and beyond for outstanding results. What do patients get in return? A faster treatment process, quicker recovery time, and a seamlessly confident new smile that’s built to last.

Benefits of Dental Implants

If you are interested in facing tooth loss head-on, but you aren’t sure whether or not dental implants are right for you, you might find it helpful to learn why they are so loved. Fortunately, this section is dedicated to the benefits that come with this state-of-the-art tooth-replacement option, starting with a boost to your self-esteem!

Day-to-Day Benefits

Here are the benefits of dental implants in Green Bay that you’ll likely notice first:

  • Boosted Self-Esteem – It’s no secret that tooth loss can take a toll on your confidence. Since dental implants are secured to your jawbone and the restorations placed on top are custom-made, they look and feel extremely natural. So, you’ll be able to smile with confidence!
  • Renewed Bite Strength – Simply put, dental implants give patients a stronger bite compared to traditional removable dentures, enabling them to eat traditionally tough-to-chew foods like steak or fresh fruits/vegetables with ease.
  • Clearer Speech – Some patients are surprised by how much their speaking patterns change following tooth loss. The good news is that we can replace one, a few, or an entire arch of teeth with dental implants, leading to better pronunciation and more confident speech.

Health Benefits

Choosing to rebuild your smile with dental implants can also benefit your oral and overall health by:

  • Preventing Bone Loss – Unlike other tooth-replacement options, dental implants are placed in the jawbone. The stimulation that’s provided each time you chew helps prevent bone loss.
  • Allowing You to Eat a More Varied Diet – Patients who have experienced tooth loss are often left eating applesauce, plain yogurt, and other extremely soft foods on repeat. This makes it difficult to get all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your body needs to thrive. Fortunately, dental implants can help by giving you a strong bite that allows you to eat healthy, well-balanced meals again.
  • Preserving the Alignment of Your Bite – Following tooth loss, it’s common for the teeth surrounding the gap to move. Known as “dental drift,” this can lead to several issues, including chronic jaw pain. Fortunately, dental implants can fill the gaps in your smile before that happens.

Long-Term Benefits

There are also several long-term benefits that make investing in dental implants worth it, including:

  • They Are Long-Lasting – While traditional dental bridges and dentures typically last for about 7-10 years, dental implants can last for 30+ years with proper maintenance, like brushing twice a day and scheduling a cleaning twice a year.
  • They Have a High Success Rate – Simply put, dental implants have a success rate of over 95% for non-smoking patients.
  • They Help Preserve Your Face Shape – Have you noticed that tooth loss has left you with a sunken-in, hollow appearance? If so, you’ll be happy to hear that the stimulation dental implants provide to your jawbone contributes to a more youthful facial structure.

Dental Implants FAQs

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

Dr. O’Donoghue and our whole team employ advanced techniques, sedation, and anesthesia to minimize discomfort during implant placement. We’ll take every step to ensure you have a smooth recovery, including prescribing pain medication so you remain comfortable, especially during the first few days.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The exact timeline depends on your unique needs, but dental implant treatment is typically a multi-step process. For a single tooth implant, the process typically takes about 3–4 months from start to finish. This allows time for the implant to fully integrate with the jawbone before the final crown is securely placed. With a hybrid implant-supported bridge, patients typically receive a temporary set of teeth the very same day their implants are placed. This allows them to leave their appointment with a complete smile right away. After a healing period of about six months — during which the implants fully integrate with the jawbone — the final, permanent prosthesis is placed, providing long-term comfort, function, and esthetics.

Are dental implants suitable for everyone?

In most cases, dental implants are a viable option. However, factors such as bone density and overall health play a role. Dr. O’Donoghue always assesses individual suitability during a comprehensive consultation to make sure dental implants truly are a good option.

How do I care for dental implants?

Caring for implants is akin to natural teeth – regular brushing, flossing, and routine check-ups with your general dentist. Our team provides personalized aftercare guidance to ensure long- term success.
