How Do All-On-X Dental Implants Work?

The “X” in All-On-X refers to the number of implants used to anchor a denture to a patient’s jawbone, usually ranging from four to six posts per arch of teeth. Rather than just sitting on top of the gums (and sliding out of place), these prosthetic teeth are connected directly to the jawbone to make them extraordinarily secure. How many implants are necessary will be dependent on the state and strength of your jawbone, which Dr. O’Donoghue will determine using advanced 3D imaging.
A patient can usually receive a custom temporary hybrid denture at the same appointment they undergo dental implant surgery. This allows them to benefit from having teeth while healing (taking about 4-6 months), during which the implants will fuse with the jawbone, and their custom permanent denture will be designed, fabricated, and eventually attached.
Am I a Candidate for All-On-X?

We typically recommend All-On-X for patients who are missing all or most of their teeth on the top and/or bottom. The two biggest factors that make someone a good candidate are having enough healthy jawbone to hold the implants, and they must also be healthy enough to undergo oral surgery. All-On-X can also be used to upgrade a patient from traditional removable dentures if they want a more long-term solution that also better resembles real teeth.
Benefits of All-On-X

- Efficient: In many cases, we can place implants and top them with a temporary denture at the same appointment while creating the final restoration, allowing patients to recover their teeth relatively quickly compared to other solutions.
- Reliable: Removable dentures are notorious for not staying in place, but All-On-X gives patients a fixed prosthetic they can trust with every bite or word.
- Durable: Dental implants have an amazing 35+ year average lifespan, while traditional dentures typically need to be replaced every 7-10 years.
- Preservation: Jawbone loss is a real problem following tooth loss, but dental implants like All-On-X can stop this process, saving a patient from further complications while helping them maintain a more youthful and healthy facial appearance.
